Summer fun, it's right around the corner...

The month of July is nearly over and this means the exciting part of the summer is just around the corner!
For the first time in over four years I get to spend an entire month with my little guy and I'm bursting with excitement on all the things we are going to be doing together!
I may sound crazy to my family when I told them that I said "no" to putting him in camps, and I may sound nuts to my friends when I said "we're spending August together" (we = my son, my daughter and I) but I can hardly wait!
The month of August...four lovely weeks to discover new things, go to new places and have a great time doing it!
The best part is we are doing things within a three hour radius of where we live, mainly because the little miss needs a bottle around every 3.5 to 4hrs, so I don't want to be driving too far and risk having to take twice as long to get somewhere.
Anyhow our list of destinations include:
Andrew Haydon Park, Hogg's Back Park, Pappinack Park Zoo, Storybook Land, Mini Putt, the Museum of Nature, The Museum of Science and Technology, The Aviation Museum, The Museum of Civilization, Cosmic Adventures, Upper Canada Village, a day trip to Kingston and Gananoque and the 1000 islands, a day trip to Montreal (if the biodome and insectitorium's labour dispute is over), Mont. cascade water park, a weekend camping trip and who knows where else!
It's going to be fun filled summer of 'adventures' for the three of us, and some MEGA bonding time.
The longest we have gone in a car together is 45 minutes (from here to my parents place) so I'm starting to do some searching to see what I could use to help pass the time (as some of these places are a nice distance from us...but I think Kingston is the longest drive we will endure)
So the planning is nearly complete...and soon we will have our summer schedule and I'm sure it will be a learning experience for all three of us.

And the thunder rolls...

I feel like I'm in the middle of that Garth Brooks song (I love this song mind you)
"The thunder rolls...and the lightning strikes!"
LOVE IT!

Even though I can sing that song in a full 'off tone' voice, when it comes to the real thing...well I don't really enjoy the thunder and lightning as much as I have to admit I do.

When I was younger, I was the child who would cower, cry and ask to go home when a storm came rolling through. I was deathly afraid of the storms, so much that I remember being at a birthday party and asking the parents to call my parents as I was freaked out and freaking out. I was crying and everything.
I was not a good child when it came to dealing with storms.

I've somewhat grown out of it, and all I can pray for is that my two little ones do not develop the same fear I once had (and still kind of do)

Someone told me that I need to appear fearless when it comes to storms and that when it comes to fears, moms cannot be human. But does this include not jumping when the thunder scares the "you know what" out of me?

So to help ease the fear (which I have seen in my son's eyes) I'm using the same stories my parents told me...

"It's just the angels bowling and they got a strike so the lights are going on and off"
or
"Some of god's angels are playing with the pots and pans, while other angels are playing with the lights."

And my little guy just looks at me with a blank expression and says "why mom?"
the little miss...well, she has no clue what I'm talking about so I get the gummy grin and the look that says "I'll believe ANYTHING you say mom! ANYTHING at all!" (and I'm happy with that!)

And so, I guess this leads me to what I'm wondering the most right now...do moms have to be 'fearless' and do we have to appear as if we have an explanation for everything?

Well, if I say yes to both of these then I'm putting me, as a mom, higher up than I should be.

I'm far from fearless. Thunderstorms are still number one on my list, and I am not afraid to show my kids that they do bug me...but I want them to grow up and not worry about the loud booming noises of storms...so I will try my best to be fearless. I'm afraid of spiders that come down from their string and dangle beside your head. I'm afraid of the earwig that somehow manages to climb up your clothing and sit perched on your shoulder. I'm also afraid of the unknown.
But to my children, I'm fearless. I'm the one who doesn't jump when the thunder booms, I'm the one who squishes the bug and the one who swats away the spider and I also know everything.

Do I have answers for everything...I don't believe I ever will have answers for everything. My answers, when I'm at a loss for answers, comes from my dear friend "google" (and by dear friend, i mean that lovely search engine that has never let me down for as long as I have used it)
Now instead of my son asking me for the answer he says "mom can we google this" Yes he is only 4 1/2 yrs old, but at least he knows that there are some things his dear old mom doesn't know...and at least I don't have to 'pretend' I have the answer. We can do it together and find out the truth.

If I had to be fearless and I had to know everything well, as a friend told me, I wouldn't appear to be human if I was fearless and knew everything.

So I guess I answered my own questions.
I don't have to be fearless.
I don't need to know everything...I just have to appear that I do.

bedroom vs bathroom....

My bedroom. I love it. I has my most favourite piece of furniture that I own in it...my bed.
There is just something about my bed that I enjoy.
But lately, my little guy is confusing my bedroom with the bathroom.
mind you, this is not happening in the daylight. It happens around midnight and has been happening for the past few weeks (not every night mind you)
The event happens a little something like this.
I'm in bed, relaxing, getting comfy, hogging the bed most nights as I'm the first one in bed (ha ha) and I hear some noises in the other room (the little man's room is right next to ours)
I hear him get out of bed...he shuffles a bit and next thing I know I hear the footsteps of him leaving the bedroom.
Next thing I know the little guy walks in...I hear more footsteps and think "he's coming to see me" but I'm wrong.
They pass my side of the bed...but for some reason, he's walking to the back of my room. I look at him, and I see he is following the double closet doors...and he stops at the corner of the closet and the wall.
I ask him "what are you doing sweetie?"
he replies "going pee mom"
well, that's when the covers come off, I jump out of bed, take him by the shoulders and ask him to hold that thought.
I look down as I'm directing him out of the bedroom and realise he has managed to wiggles his pants down to his ankles...he's ready to go and we still have a bit of a walk yet.
So I direct him to the bathroom and at the nick-of-time, he pees into the toilet.
It always ends with "I need to wash my hands" and he makes it to the sink, he drops the soap on the floor, picks it up and puts it in the sink and he asks "can you put my covers on please?"
The next morning i ask him about his 'misadventure' and he laughs.
He says "I'd never do that mommy! you're telling me stories again!"

Mommy, maman, mom...but I'm also ME!

To my son, I'm "mom", "Mommy", "Maman."
To my daughter I'm that lady who comes into her room with a big smile, changes her diaper, gives her a bottle, dresses her up and plays with her.
I'm the one who gets them ready to go places, I play with them, I am the 'time-out' setter, I'm their mom.
With all the ups, and the downs...no matter what comes my way, I love it.

But today, after chatting with an old friend, I realised something...I'm letting my 'non-mom' life slip away from me...and that is something I cannot let happen.
Sure my kids are my life, and I'm blessed to have friends who understand this. They respect the fact that I don't take calls between 7 and 8:30 p.m. (due to bed times). They respect and understand that my youngest child would be coming with me when we went places (as I wasn't ready to leave her...just yet)
and I love and respect them for their understanding...and I know for them, it can be frustrating.
They also understand that I have a 'time frame' of when it's best for me to go, and be back by. I love them for this, and hopefully they know this...(if not, they know now)
Anyhow...I called a very very old friend...we try to meet up at least once every few months. The last time I saw her...my daughter was a few weeks old (my daughter is now nearly four months old). I saw her for about 20 min, we chatted for a bit and she had to go pick up her brother.
Since then, I haven't chatted with her...and I realised today that I really missed our conversations, etc.
I called her and it was like for five minutes, I could be me...not 'mom, mommy, or maman'
So we have plans for next week and I'm looking forward to this. Sure it will be hard, as I think I'm ready to leave my young daughter with my parents (this will be a first) but we'll have to wait and see if I can. If I cannot, she already told me she understands if the little one is with us.
Speaking of leaving her...I have left her with others (my parents or inlaws) when I've had no other choice, but this is my choice...and I think I'm ready to just let everything go for an afternoon and have a chance to be 'me' and for a few moments, to leave the title of "mommy, mom, and maman" behind.

Mommy went back to school...but just for one day.

When you think about school, I doubt "summer" and "kindergarten" come to mind.
When you mention school to a child, you think they will shudder, run away screaming and hide in a closet until they hear you say "JUST KIDDING!"
Well, today I went back to school...and there was no "just kidding" that came from my son's mouth.
He woke up and said "mommy, you're coming to école (school) with me today right?" so instead of nudging the partner and saying "it's your turn today hun" he got to sleep, and I got ready, had my shower and put a small lunch together (heck if I would be shadowing him, I had to get the full experience right?)
So from 8:30 until 11:20a.m. I got to shadow my little man at his 1/2 day french program.
I got to see their routine, I got to see what they do, I got to see how the teacher handles each and every child while still managing to get the days lesson taught.
(I have so much respect for her...13 children ranging in age from 3 1/2 to 5yrs old and not one issue arose where the class went A-wall...I could never do it)
But of course, those who know me best...I wasn't the best of students when it came to two seperate things "talking" and "day-dreaming / not paying attention"
So yes, it was quite difficult for me to actually stay focused in this classroom setting...I guess it didn't help that the amazing lady next to me kept chatting, and of course I chatted back and we tried our best to route the conversation around the lesson (aka-when the kids were listening to the teacher, or a story was being told) but no one said much of anything.
No looks...nothing.
(I guess we are all or more accepting of 'the gift to gab' these days than we were back in the day, when we were doing our time)
I helped my little guy make "goop" (corn startch and water, but not too much water) which made quite the mess...but man it was fun to say "yes, get dirty hun! don't worry!" and his eyes just lit up and the look of 'WHAT MOM SAID GET DIRTY' just echoed in his smile.
I saw him participate, I heard him speak french, answer questions, and listen to direction from another person (besides me and my partner). I saw him understand and I saw the delight in his eyes when he did something right!
we made a story book, we coloured pictures, we helped to clean up and then circle time.
So hats off to the teachers who teach our children!
I have so much respect for them!
I give my 'back to school experience' a HUGE A+
At the end of the day, my own son asked me how I liked école (school) and I told him how much I enjoyed it and would love to come back another day to see what they are doing.
He gave me a look (one that you don't expect from a 4 1/2 yr old) and he said "mommy, you did good at école, but tomorrow I think you should stay home. I think you are just too old for école. oh and mommy, if you come back you cannot talk. You have to pay attention to what madame is saying. It's a life skill. Listening."
*sigh*
I guess I should have paid more attention when I was in school. At least I know my son (right now) is on the right track.

What's that smell? Oh...it's me!!

I'm sure every other mom out there can understand that no matter how much we shower, bath, change our clothing, wash our clothing...that smell of baby, spit-up, children, etc...it lingers. We can try to mask it with expensive "eau-de-toilette" or a nice body spray that we purchased at an insanely high price at Shoppers Drug mart or Pharma Plus, but it's still there. Others may not smell it or notice it...but it's there!
It's a new fragrance...it's called "eau-de-maman" and you can get it for free. There is no cost. There is no expensive glass bottle that you need to care for. There is no pump you need to push...you just need to have a baby or a child to cuddle and you have it.
"Eau De Maman"
It's a best seller in this house...and I love it because it's free!
Sure it doesn't smell as nice as "Happy" (by clinic) or one of those designer fragrances by one of the hottest celebrities, but for a mom (for me) it's a great way to remember how much I love being a mom, no matter how hard, miserable, upsetting, or stressful it may be.
I just wish people wouldn't point out "Excuse me m'am but you have something liquidy and white running down your shirt...."
Of course, I just wipe it up with a spit blanket, towel, Kleenex, or my hand (which results in wiping it on my jeans) and a smile with a "thank you. One of the joys of having a baby"
After wiping it on my jeans, something clicks...I just wiped it on my jeans! now I have to smell like this all day.
I make a mental note to squirt that body mist...but I never get around to it.
My 4 1/2 yr old uses my sleeve as his personal Kleenex. I tell him "you don't do that" and I proceed to wipe my sleeve on my jeans...and think "I did it again!"
Later he accidentally draws on my jeans, my baby sneezes on me, I drop some formula on my shirt (and wipe it up) i get some tears from the little guy who stubbed his toe on the door and some food that somehow managed to jump from his mouth and land on my jeans.
I walk by the mirror to make sure there are no 'visible' stains on what I'm wearing and I smile, because today I'm being brave...I am not changing what I'm wearing!
By the end of the day...the kids have been bathed (due to thinking it's them that smell), they are in bed sleeping and it is nearly 10:30. The smell is still there...then I think back of everything that happened and I smile, sigh and say "that smell? It's me!"
I'm proud of the fact that I smell like a mom...even if it means I smell like my kids.

Over the meadow and through the woods...

To the laundry room we go...
yup.
This is becoming my new hobby...not that I pride myself in doing all this laundry. Before the arrival our little miss, I was doing three loads a week. Mine, the little man's and the towels. Hubby and I have a deal that we do our own laundry, due to many mis-haps (such as shirts going in the dryer, when the tag says "hang to-dry") though I'm not pointing fingers! I swear!
But these days, I'm learning there is more to my 'daily laundry routine' than putting in the soap, throwing it all in and turning the machine on and walking away.
Yes. I have successfully ruined a few pieces of the little miss' clothing by putting in the whites with the reds! (yes, I'm officially the breaker of the "don't mix colours with the whites" rule that my mother pounded into my head when I was 10 yrs old and being taught how to use the machine and starting to do my own laundry)
I washed the few white pieces of clothing, praying that the red blotches faded away...they did a bit, but now there are three lovely pieces of clothing that I will never be able to pass along, sell, or donate...well, maybe donate, but who would want a red blotch on a white onesie that says "Snow" on it?
I digress.
So with the addition of just one extra person, I'm now up to six loads of laundry a week.
(the life of a woman on maternity leave...it doesn't get any better than this)
Plus with this heatwave, and the air conditioner being on more than I would like it to be...I'm doing my laundry at night, which means less sleep for me and the poor little man (and hubby) have to deal with a very grumpy mommy.
And do I blame my little miss?
how could I?
after I see her beautiful smile, her big bright blue eyes and her new found obsession with making noises that make you think she is imitating a very squeaky door in need of some oil...no, I cannot be mad at her.
I know the massive spit-ups will come to an end...the non-stop drool is just temporary and the need for me to post a "looking for receiving blankets or burp blankets" on a few different groups that I'm part of is just part of the whole "you have a baby...and after four years don't tell me you have forgotten this" syndrome that I feel I now have.
Could life get any more interesting than this?
(yes that is dripping with sarcasm)
