Week one = survived, now on to week two.

Eight days have passed, we are well into August, and I'm proud to announce that there are no casulties (zero! null, nada!)
The three of us (myself, the little miss and the little man) are all alive and kicking.
It was trying at times, and other times it was a walk in the park...but that is the joy of being a family and spending your first summer in nearly four years together.
We did a lot of 'learning' about each other, even though we do know each other pretty darn well.
The little man doesn't like his routine thrown out the window, the little miss still isn't used to being around her older brother all this time...but I know that will change (and I see the change constantly...I'm sure she will miss him big time come September) and me? I enjoy my 'quiet time' in the afternoon, even if that means turning on "Knowledge Kids" and letting the little guy watch it for an hour...I get some 'quiet time' and I am able to unwind from the morning (and I'm not a grumpy bear come dinner time)
But the one thing I have really figured out is when people say "come over, the kids can play, we can chat and relax a bit" that I have to start saying "yes" and stop making 'excuses' thinking that the kids will be too tired and they won't listen, etc...
So I've done just that.
This week in particular, we have four out of seven days with playdates, one day we have two seperate things...and if the little guy is tired, at least he will sleep...plus he will be a busy boy (which he likes)
I also have to say...parents (aka grandparents) are a godsend when it comes to needing a few hours off or when it comes to accompaning you and the kids somewhere.
It makes life so much more exciting for the little ones and it makes mommy a happier and more relaxed individual.
So here is to week #2.
I am more confident and more sure that things will go amazingly well.

And so it begins...

August.
This means two things.
1. 31 days with both children, finding a means for survival and keeping the peace.
2. 31 days until school officially starts and I can get the little miss back on somewhat of a schedule.
But even with all the ups and downs of the upcoming month, I am very excited to be able to spend so much time with my little guy and letting him spend ample time with his baby sister!
This will be a great time for both of them! they will definitely be able to bond and grow closer than they already are. This will be a super time for me to see how my little guy has grown up and watch him grow even more.
It will be a great time for the little miss to learn a few new things from her big brother, and for her to give me that 'mild heart attack' as she learns these things too early and grows up too quickly.

Being the 2nd of August, I have to be very happy to say I have survived two days with the kids! I haven't been alone the entire time, I have had some help but today...it was mostly me and there wasn't one melt down that required a 'time out' or a 'look at me' discipline tactic.

I was very happy with my little man for being such a 'big guy'.
Of course, he was and is a typical 4 1/2 yr old who just wants to "go, go, go" and I don't blame him. There is a big wide world to explore.

Today he discovered that it is okay to still be shy, but at the same time, being a little bit 'outgoing' isn't that bad...you just have to keep you 'high spirited energy' under control...and heck, that is where I came in.

I took the "mommy you need to mellow out" comment with a grain of salt.
And this comment was said by him on the way to a birthday party. My first attempt at doing something "solo" with both kids at a 'new friend's place' and I didn't know what to expect.
So basically I thought that a comment like this, coming from a 4 1/2 yr old you know that it means something. So I only said one thing to him "promise me you will be the best boy you can be"
I let him play. I let him do what he does best...and I was very impressed at the restraint he used in playing with three children, one of which was two years in his junior.
He was his playful, shy and happy self...but at the same time he didn't bounce off the walls. There was no "mine" there was no "I want this" it was the little man that I know and love! It was the little man that has worked so hard at being good! I was so proud of him!
I had time to help. I had time to talk. I had time to play with the little miss (who was the youngest member invited to the party) and I actually can say I was relaxed and for the first time happy to be a mom of two...especially a mom of such a well-behaved boy!

On the walk home from the party the little man was very happy with me. He asked me "did you have fun mommy?"
Instead of a frown and trying to find a part in the day where I did have fun and getting ready to lecture him on something he needs to improve upon, I said with a big huge smile "Yes. Yes I did have fun buddy! I'm glad we went!"
I never mentioned his good behavior. I think he figured it out for himself by the look of pure happiness that I gave him.

Christmas in July...

means there is TONS of explaining to do with the little man regarding "Santa Claus", the "naughty and nice list", why Santa was at the zoo today and how come he wasn't wearing his 'winter clothing' and then the BIG QUESTION "Is he the REAL Santa mommy?"

So of course, throughout the entire time we were walking up and down the paths, looking at the many different animals and reading about them; my little guy asked me these questions and wanted serious answers.
People around me smiled as I tried to answer him in the best possible way, without smiling and making him feel as if the questions were a bit too much and a wee bit too early.
After all was said and done, he decided the following answers were to his liking:
(some of the answers were aided by "Santa")

-Santa starts the naughty and nice list five months before Christmas. He starts making his trek back up to the north pole (from his holiday house down south) and visits different places to see how all the girls and boys are doing. Santa told him all the boys and girls start on the "nice list" and depending on how they are from one Christmas to the other, that is how they can move to the naughty list or stay on the nice list. (thank you Santa!) and yes, waking up your sister when she is fast asleep does mean you get a 'mark' next to your name that could put you on the naughty list (again, thank you Santa!)

-Santa has summer clothing. It would be way to hot for him to have a vacation down south without having shorts and a t-shirt. But today, it was a little too chilly for Santa to wear his shorts (thank you Santa) and Mrs. Claus said "put your pants on dear, the weather says it will be chilly in Ottawa." (again thank you Santa)

The one question I didn't answer too directly was "is this the real Santa mommy" I told him that if he believed that this was the real Santa, then he is the real Santa.
I told him that Santa has TONS of elves that go around and help Santa to make sure that the 'naughty and nice' list is up to date. So if he believes that the Santa that he is seeing is the real one, then that is his decision.

With that, my little guy was very happy.

He had a serious discussion with Santa and he also added a few things which included a very "early" list of what he would like for Christmas. I thought it would be LITTERED with toys, but it was just one thing.

"Can you make sure you don't forget to bring my baby sister something. It's her first Christmas. Mommy says it's special. She's only a baby and I don't think she can be good or bad. She can only be a baby."
This just melted my heart.

But right before we left chatting with Santa he said
"oh, I'd like a new transformer"

Summer fun, it's right around the corner...

The month of July is nearly over and this means the exciting part of the summer is just around the corner!
For the first time in over four years I get to spend an entire month with my little guy and I'm bursting with excitement on all the things we are going to be doing together!
I may sound crazy to my family when I told them that I said "no" to putting him in camps, and I may sound nuts to my friends when I said "we're spending August together" (we = my son, my daughter and I) but I can hardly wait!
The month of August...four lovely weeks to discover new things, go to new places and have a great time doing it!
The best part is we are doing things within a three hour radius of where we live, mainly because the little miss needs a bottle around every 3.5 to 4hrs, so I don't want to be driving too far and risk having to take twice as long to get somewhere.
Anyhow our list of destinations include:
Andrew Haydon Park, Hogg's Back Park, Pappinack Park Zoo, Storybook Land, Mini Putt, the Museum of Nature, The Museum of Science and Technology, The Aviation Museum, The Museum of Civilization, Cosmic Adventures, Upper Canada Village, a day trip to Kingston and Gananoque and the 1000 islands, a day trip to Montreal (if the biodome and insectitorium's labour dispute is over), Mont. cascade water park, a weekend camping trip and who knows where else!
It's going to be fun filled summer of 'adventures' for the three of us, and some MEGA bonding time.
The longest we have gone in a car together is 45 minutes (from here to my parents place) so I'm starting to do some searching to see what I could use to help pass the time (as some of these places are a nice distance from us...but I think Kingston is the longest drive we will endure)
So the planning is nearly complete...and soon we will have our summer schedule and I'm sure it will be a learning experience for all three of us.

And the thunder rolls...

I feel like I'm in the middle of that Garth Brooks song (I love this song mind you)
"The thunder rolls...and the lightning strikes!"
LOVE IT!

Even though I can sing that song in a full 'off tone' voice, when it comes to the real thing...well I don't really enjoy the thunder and lightning as much as I have to admit I do.

When I was younger, I was the child who would cower, cry and ask to go home when a storm came rolling through. I was deathly afraid of the storms, so much that I remember being at a birthday party and asking the parents to call my parents as I was freaked out and freaking out. I was crying and everything.
I was not a good child when it came to dealing with storms.

I've somewhat grown out of it, and all I can pray for is that my two little ones do not develop the same fear I once had (and still kind of do)

Someone told me that I need to appear fearless when it comes to storms and that when it comes to fears, moms cannot be human. But does this include not jumping when the thunder scares the "you know what" out of me?

So to help ease the fear (which I have seen in my son's eyes) I'm using the same stories my parents told me...

"It's just the angels bowling and they got a strike so the lights are going on and off"
or
"Some of god's angels are playing with the pots and pans, while other angels are playing with the lights."

And my little guy just looks at me with a blank expression and says "why mom?"
the little miss...well, she has no clue what I'm talking about so I get the gummy grin and the look that says "I'll believe ANYTHING you say mom! ANYTHING at all!" (and I'm happy with that!)

And so, I guess this leads me to what I'm wondering the most right now...do moms have to be 'fearless' and do we have to appear as if we have an explanation for everything?

Well, if I say yes to both of these then I'm putting me, as a mom, higher up than I should be.

I'm far from fearless. Thunderstorms are still number one on my list, and I am not afraid to show my kids that they do bug me...but I want them to grow up and not worry about the loud booming noises of storms...so I will try my best to be fearless. I'm afraid of spiders that come down from their string and dangle beside your head. I'm afraid of the earwig that somehow manages to climb up your clothing and sit perched on your shoulder. I'm also afraid of the unknown.
But to my children, I'm fearless. I'm the one who doesn't jump when the thunder booms, I'm the one who squishes the bug and the one who swats away the spider and I also know everything.

Do I have answers for everything...I don't believe I ever will have answers for everything. My answers, when I'm at a loss for answers, comes from my dear friend "google" (and by dear friend, i mean that lovely search engine that has never let me down for as long as I have used it)
Now instead of my son asking me for the answer he says "mom can we google this" Yes he is only 4 1/2 yrs old, but at least he knows that there are some things his dear old mom doesn't know...and at least I don't have to 'pretend' I have the answer. We can do it together and find out the truth.

If I had to be fearless and I had to know everything well, as a friend told me, I wouldn't appear to be human if I was fearless and knew everything.

So I guess I answered my own questions.
I don't have to be fearless.
I don't need to know everything...I just have to appear that I do.

bedroom vs bathroom....

My bedroom. I love it. I has my most favourite piece of furniture that I own in it...my bed.
There is just something about my bed that I enjoy.
But lately, my little guy is confusing my bedroom with the bathroom.
mind you, this is not happening in the daylight. It happens around midnight and has been happening for the past few weeks (not every night mind you)
The event happens a little something like this.
I'm in bed, relaxing, getting comfy, hogging the bed most nights as I'm the first one in bed (ha ha) and I hear some noises in the other room (the little man's room is right next to ours)
I hear him get out of bed...he shuffles a bit and next thing I know I hear the footsteps of him leaving the bedroom.
Next thing I know the little guy walks in...I hear more footsteps and think "he's coming to see me" but I'm wrong.
They pass my side of the bed...but for some reason, he's walking to the back of my room. I look at him, and I see he is following the double closet doors...and he stops at the corner of the closet and the wall.
I ask him "what are you doing sweetie?"
he replies "going pee mom"
well, that's when the covers come off, I jump out of bed, take him by the shoulders and ask him to hold that thought.
I look down as I'm directing him out of the bedroom and realise he has managed to wiggles his pants down to his ankles...he's ready to go and we still have a bit of a walk yet.
So I direct him to the bathroom and at the nick-of-time, he pees into the toilet.
It always ends with "I need to wash my hands" and he makes it to the sink, he drops the soap on the floor, picks it up and puts it in the sink and he asks "can you put my covers on please?"
The next morning i ask him about his 'misadventure' and he laughs.
He says "I'd never do that mommy! you're telling me stories again!"

Mommy, maman, mom...but I'm also ME!

To my son, I'm "mom", "Mommy", "Maman."
To my daughter I'm that lady who comes into her room with a big smile, changes her diaper, gives her a bottle, dresses her up and plays with her.
I'm the one who gets them ready to go places, I play with them, I am the 'time-out' setter, I'm their mom.
With all the ups, and the downs...no matter what comes my way, I love it.

But today, after chatting with an old friend, I realised something...I'm letting my 'non-mom' life slip away from me...and that is something I cannot let happen.
Sure my kids are my life, and I'm blessed to have friends who understand this. They respect the fact that I don't take calls between 7 and 8:30 p.m. (due to bed times). They respect and understand that my youngest child would be coming with me when we went places (as I wasn't ready to leave her...just yet)
and I love and respect them for their understanding...and I know for them, it can be frustrating.
They also understand that I have a 'time frame' of when it's best for me to go, and be back by. I love them for this, and hopefully they know this...(if not, they know now)
Anyhow...I called a very very old friend...we try to meet up at least once every few months. The last time I saw her...my daughter was a few weeks old (my daughter is now nearly four months old). I saw her for about 20 min, we chatted for a bit and she had to go pick up her brother.
Since then, I haven't chatted with her...and I realised today that I really missed our conversations, etc.
I called her and it was like for five minutes, I could be me...not 'mom, mommy, or maman'
So we have plans for next week and I'm looking forward to this. Sure it will be hard, as I think I'm ready to leave my young daughter with my parents (this will be a first) but we'll have to wait and see if I can. If I cannot, she already told me she understands if the little one is with us.
Speaking of leaving her...I have left her with others (my parents or inlaws) when I've had no other choice, but this is my choice...and I think I'm ready to just let everything go for an afternoon and have a chance to be 'me' and for a few moments, to leave the title of "mommy, mom, and maman" behind.
