Today is just another day.
This is what I tell myself over and over again just so I can manage to get through the 365 days of Maternity Leave.
I'm a work-a-holic. I love working and my life revolved around being busy, around chatting with other people while they walked in and out of the office, and sharing a good laugh with my fellow co-workers and work-associates. My conversations, they never revolved around diapers, snotty noses and what recent milestone the newest addition has achieved. But alas, this is something I am conforming to, now that I've re-entered the chapter known as 'maternity leave'.
Basically I'm just over three mmonths into my leave, and I've asked myself "what do I have to show for myself?" and with no hesitation, I can hold my head up proud and say an amazingly handsome and very bright four-and-one-half-year-old boy, and the most beautiful baby girl you could ever imagine...who is now 11 weeks and 3 days old.
But the reality is, I CRAVE adult interaction...and if I could shout it any louder I would! I CRAVE it!
it's not like I coudl chat with my son about the state and situation of the oil spill without having to explain every detail at least five or six times...and still have him ask "why" or "how come?" and then finally "can we play transformers?"
I even tried chatting with my little miss, and she just gave me the 'doe-eyed-bambi-look' (which melted my heart) and the false impression that she absorbed every detail and piece of information that I told her.
If this continues (me telling her all this stuff) I fear she may share my love and craving for current events, and who knows...maybe she, as well will jump at the opportunity to become a writer or journalist (as I'm an ex-journalist/writer now, and this is as close as I will get to the real thing these days)
I just need to know what's going on out there...I need to know what's happening, and not just what's going on in my house...I want to know more than the name of all the Transformers, how the fart that my son had in the bathtub made the water spash all over or that Thomas The Train and Elmo are having another fight over who sleeps in my son's bed.
(sigh)
And that need to know...well, I wish it could be swept under the welcome mat, but NOPE! I need to know. I need to read about it...and if that neighbour of mine steals the newspaper one more time (and I know that it is being taken as I hear the paper delivery person drops it off at around 5:30 a.m....I'm just too lazy at this hour to go get it) I swear I will come out in my most "homely" pj's and chase him down the pathway until he surrenders what he stole...followed by a few swift wacks with the rolled up news paper. (Why is it, that this scene looks so much more humourous in my head than if I were to do it in real life?)
So instead...I hear about things second hand. And I'm actually getting used to it. I pretend that I know what's going on, but even though I crave my 'news' and I crave my 'current events' I have a soft spot for what my son's friend did at school that just ticked him (my son) off and I even enjoy trying to work out the problems between Thomas The Train and Elmo.
So I'm conforming and becoming a 'temporary stay at home mom' for the next nine months...and I have a feeling, that with time, I will again, learn to relax and love my maternity leave and being out of the loop...just for a little bit.
